In a myriad of ways! Social media or your local chamber of commerce might be good ways to start. Sign up for my free guide, Advice for Starting a Studio, to see a more detailed explanation covering my own experience.

With a young student (ages 4-6), you may not even need a book right away! With students learning the Suzuki Method, many "strict" Suzuki teachers and trainers say the Suzuki repertoire books themselves are sufficient. I disagree! I made a lot of progress in various areas such as note reading and rhythm when my teachers supplemented repertoire with other method books. When I worked for music stores, I got excellent recommendations for additional books from coworkers. They have made a big difference in my playing and teaching! I offer specific recommendations based on this knowledge and my own experience in the "Planning a Studio: Materials" video set, available for purchase below. I specify whether each book is appropriate for Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced levels.

There is some strategy here! I give ideas for what to teach and what not to teach in the first lesson, and reasons why, in my free guide, Advice for Starting a Studio, available by filling out the request form here.

You need to assign students effective exercises in a logical progression. My videos show a slew of great exercises. The key to stress with your students is consistent daily practice on this skill in particular! When this is in place, a student can develop a reliable beginning vibrato in 30 days. Also, it's important not to teach vibrato too soon . . . Find out why in "Interview with Melodie Gardner" and check out my No-Fail Vibrato Regimen in the "Technique and Vibrato" videos.

No! In fact, you don't even need to play the violin at an advanced level to be an effective teacher!! I have seen this in multiple scenarios. My teacher-in-training, Roo, featured in these videos, has two private students as of the completion of this project despite having never finished the Suzuki books herself. Qualities in a good teacher are discussed in my series and include soft skills such as patience, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn. As American novelist and teacher Gail Godwin said, "Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths pure theatre." These qualities matter more in guiding a young person than the level at which you perform on your instrument.
